Virus alert! I have received a message that TARGET was a virus. What can I do?
It's really terrible, because nowadays some clever virus watcher finds something in every new EXE. Since we initially pack our EXE with UPX from 24 MB to 8.5 MB, everyone thinks there is something hidden in it. With other programs, new EXEs are not released so often and the files are therefore better known.
We have signed our files with the latest and most expensive EV code signing certificates and yet...
The files come directly from the compiler, are directly virus-checked and immediately packed and signed. Therefore, the probability that the file was infected afterwards is low if it has our correct signature.
To check the signature and the certificate, right-click on the accused EXE file in the Windows file browser and select "Properties" from the context menu. The certificate should look like this:
(Fig. 1: Signature with timestamp and our certificate, pardon for the German words)
Both the installer and the actual EXE can be accused in this way. If you have checked that the file is clean as shown above, you can enter an exception for this file in most virus detectors. Such an exception should contain the complete path with the file name. If the file has already been deleted by the virus guard, you will then have to perform the download or installation again.
We make every effort to avoid such false positives. But it's a bit like Don Quixote and his windmills...
